Tribute to Asma Jahangir

An event to honour late Ms. Asma Jahangir (human rights lawyer and social activist), was held on Friday, June 1st, 2018 at the Graduate Institute of Development Studies, Lahore School of Economics.

Dr. Rashid Amjad director of Graduate Institute of Development Studies, Mr. IA Rehman, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Dr. Fareeha Zafar, Professor at Lahore School of Economics, researchers and students were present to pay tribute to Ms. Asma Jahangir who passed away on February 11, 2018. 

Dr. Fareeha Zafar spoke at length about her association and memories of Asma Jahangir as well as her accomplishments. Asma’s sudden death came as a deep shock to her and has created a vacuum in the country.

Dr. Rashid Amjad in his speech spoke about her courage and strength which she displayed throughout her career and from which the younger generation could draw inspiration.  She always stood for defending the weak and the marginalized against injustice, despite the continuous threats to her life.  Her work and struggle raised the profile of Pakistan on international platforms.

Dr. Amjad also announced that they planned to offer a course on “Human Rights and Development” for our MPhil program at GIDS, Lahore School of Economics starting in 2019.

Mr. I.A. Rehman in his keynote address said that Asma was an icon whose services for the country will always be remembered. He praised GIDS for holding this memorial ceremony and placing a picture in honor of Asma Jahangir at the campus. In addition, he appreciated that a new course on Human Rights and Development is going to be introduced at GIDS, Lahore School of Economics.

                                          

Ms. Maham Hameed research fellow of GIDS praised Asma for being a champion of freedom of speech, democracy and the rule of law. Muhammad Aqeel Awan research scholar at GIDS also said that Asma Jahangir was the fearless lady who stood for the rights of marginalized people. She is indeed an inspiration for the younger generations.
