The Centre for International Migration, Remittances and Diaspora

The Centre on International Migration, Remittances and Diaspora (CIMRAD) was established in 2014 by the Lahore School of Economics and is the first institute of its kind in Pakistan. The Centre specializes in the study and analysis of international migration and its social and economic consequences –with a focus on the diaspora and the flow of remittances.

Speakers included Dr. Naved Hamid, Director, Center for Research in Economics and Business (CREB), Mr. Jose Lopez-Calix, Senior Economist at the World Bank, and Mr. Enrico Ponziani, Chief of Mission International Organization for Migration (IOM). The Chief Guest was Dr. Ishrat Hussain, former Governor of the State Bank and currently Dean, IBA Karachi.  Dr. Shahid Amjad Chaudhry, Rector Lahore School of Economics, was there to declare the Centre open.   

At the Inauguration for the Centre on International Migration, Remittances and Diaspora (CIMRAD), Dr. Rashid Amjad introduces the Centre and reveals the inspiration behind its establishment.

Dr. Naved Hamid, Director, Center for Research in Economics and Business (CREB) and Regional Director at the International Growth Center reflected on how remittances affect every aspect of the economy.


Mr. Jose Lopez-Calix, Senior Economist at the World Bank discusses how an interesting area of remittances study is whether they are truly able to help remove a family from poverty.


 

Mr. Enrico Ponziani, Chief of Mission International Organization for Migration (IOM), discussed many issues regarding immigrant rights and the changing dynamic among immigrant generations.
 


 

Dr. Ishrat Hussain, former Governor of the State Bank and current Dean of IBA Karachi, discusses the role the Pakistani diasopra plays in the economy and discusses the idea of "brain circulation." 
 

Dr. Shahid Amjad Chaudhry, Rector Lahore School of Economics, declared the Centre open while hoping that its work will highlight the problems, desires, and prejudices faced by the Pakistani diaspora.
