“Pakistani Diaspora in Norway”, a talk by Dr. Marta Bivand Erdal & Dr. Kaja Borchgrevink, March 05, 2018

Dr. Marta Bivand Erdal, research professor at the Peace Research Institute, Oslo, discussed the findings of her extensive research on Pakistani diaspora in Norway encompassing the history of migration to the economic and social integration of Pakistanis living in Norway.

A major focus of her talk was on integration of Pakistanis in Norway and the transnational ties they fostered for the development of their home country. Dr. Kaja, who is a senior researcher at PRIO, highlighted that Pakistanis invest in building charitable organizations, especially those that are religious. The part played by marriages and faith in maintaining these ties was of special research interest.

Dr. Rashid Amjad, Director, CIMRAD, Lahore School of Economics, said that the notion of migration is more than just sending remittances, so, one must focus on social remittances to understand the Pakistani diaspora in a more holistic way.

In his closing remarks, he expressed his gratitude to Dr. Marta & Dr. Kaja for an insightful talk, and hope for collaboration in joint research projects in the future.
