Professor David C. Engerman, Leitner International Interdisciplinary Professor of History at Yale University, visited Graduate Institute of Development Studies.

Professor David C. Engerman visited GIDS on the 14th of May 2019 to meet with Dr. Rashid Amjad and discuss his upcoming research project on the history of economic thought in the South and the life and works of Dr. Mahbub ul Haq, one of the four eminent economists from the South that he will cover in his research.

Professor Engerman is Leitner International Interdisciplinary Professor of History at Yale University. He is a scholar of twentieth-century international history. He is author of the books: Modernization from the Other Shore: American Intellectuals, the Romance of Russian Development and The Price of Aid: The Economic Cold War in India. He has also worked extensively on various topics related to the history of development assistance.

In the meeting with GIDS faculty, Professor Engerman discussed his upcoming project on the intellectual history of development economics in the south. Of particular interest to Professor Engerman was the life history of the distinguished Pakistani development economist, Dr. Mahbub ul Haq. Dr. Rashid Amjad, Director GIDS shared with him anecdotes and memoirs regarding the life and work of Dr. Haq. Dr. Fareeha Zafar, Dr. Nasra Shah, Mr. Javed Sadiq Malik and Dr. Anis Alam also exchanged their information on the topic.

The faculty and research team then shared information on the various projects that they are working on. Professor David C. Engerman was especially keen on the Economic History of Pakistan Studies project and showed interest in collaborating on it with the Lahore School of Economics.
